OUR APPROACH

The PST Six Systems Model™

Primal Systems Therapy (PST) conceptualizes development as emerging from the interaction of interconnected systems—rather than from isolated skills or behaviors. It is a practical, holistic psychotherapeutic approach, informed in part by contemplative traditions that emphasize awareness and interconnectedness.

PST can inform individualized therapeutic work with concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma-related difficulties, addiction, and autism.

The PST Six Systems Model™ grew out of this therapeutic approach.

In autism assessment, the model allows us to look beyond diagnosis to understand the individual within the wider context of their life—with the aim of supporting natural growth, greater independence, and meaningful participation in life.

What does this mean for you?

♾️

Your autistic challenges are typically seen as an outcome of your personal genetics (nature) and how your parents reacted to them (nurture).

‍ ‍

The Primal Systems Therapy Six System Model™, in short PST Six Systems Model™, does not just take into account how your parents treated you, even though that will always be an important factor. How can it not be an important factor when children are so open, vulnerable, and impressionable?

But autistic challenges are also a part of the whole, that is: your whole body (and not just your genes) interacting with your whole family (and not just your parents), with your peers, teachers, neighbors and your mostly neurotypical culture, with the natural world (do you even have quiet encounters with trees, rivers, animals?), your cognitive beliefs and non-verbal aptitudes (do you have creative expression?), and, finally, your meaning-giving value system and spiritual relationship (what do you lean onto?).

You are embedded in all these systems, and autistic challenges must be seen and addressed in this wider context.

This holistic understanding of your challenges holds real promise of finding true happiness.

Together, these six systems form the structure through which development unfolds. Our work focuses on understanding how these systems interact, where they are blocked or misaligned, and how they can be brought into greater coherence.

By understanding how these systems support or constrain one another, we are able to design individualized pathways that promote greater integration, adaptability, and forward movement—recognizing that what is often described as “happiness” emerges naturally when a person is able to participate more fully in life.

One more important thing for you

♾️

Becoming aware of experiences, just as they happen, often impacts all other systems naturally. Awareness, therefore, addresses the whole as well. It is the glue that holds all together.
